Operation Cannibal
Mayu Peninsula, Arakan, Western Burma
April 1943

Operation Cannibal

The British IV Corp‟s offensive, code-named Cannibal, was designed by General Archibald Wavell to clear the Mayu Peninsula in preparation for an amphibious assault on Akyab Island. Akyab was important as it offered a port as well as an all-weather airfield well within range of most of central Burma.

The advance was spearheaded by the 14th Indian (Light) Division under Major General W.L. Lloyd. The Japanese defenders, known as Miyawaki Force, after their commander, Colonel K. Miyawaki, fought a fighting withdrawal to prepared positions around the villages of Donbaik and Rathedaung. Knowing reinforcements were on the way, Colonel Miyawaki's forces held their positions against numerous attacks, forcing the Commonwealth forces to bring up their reserve brigade, the 6th, in a vain attempt to break through the Japanese defenses. Even these attacks, supported by tanks, were stopped.
