The reason that there were no larger figures on view is that the IWF WIC has only ever been 15mm Ancients and Renaissance. Including other scales and periods is possible but it takes a lot of work to get just one period running.

There are also space issues with venues, the larges WIC to date had close to 200 players so 100 6x4 tables, that needs a very big venue and a lot of organising.

As to 1000 plus DBM players there are 1292 players rated on the IWF international ranking system. Not all of these are still playing DBM but plenty of DBM players have never played in a rated competition.

Last weekend, over 100 gamers from well over a dozen countries gathered in Helsinki for the 11th IWF World Individual Championships.

IWF championships

Sunday's early evening news on Finland's main TV channel covered the event, starting about 6:45 into the news in this clip, as well as the short bit in the headlines. Mostly in Finnish, of course, but a great advert for the hobby.

The Finnish 10 o'clock news also had a short piece (from 15:57 forwards) on the world championships in the run-up to the championship. Dave Clarke tries to teach a Finnish reporter to play DBR.
