The emishi range is now complete and available from Baueda!

Emishi are new from Baueda

Emishi is a generic term used to describe all the populations that lived in the Northern part of Japan, specifically in the island of Hokkaido, known as Ezo, and the northern half of the Tohoku (northeast) region of Honshu. They include tribes that are considered to be the ancestors of Ainu, but also settled populations that lived closed to the Japanese and blended more with the Yamato culture.

Our range include light Emishi foot archers, forest dwellers and northern tribes types, best suited as skirmishers psiloi (O) or irregular bowmen (I). We also have armoured foot archers - the Emishi had a reputation for being fierce warriors ready to charge in hand-to-hand combat as well as archers, so these wear suitable armour and weapons for the job! They represent elite warriors from the areas closer to Yamato Japan and are best suited for the later period, as General's guard irregular Bw(S), as dismounted horse archers irregular Bw(O) and cam also be mixed in for variety with irregular Bw(I).

The Island of Hokkaido was the best of Japan's horse-raising country, where there is much open land capable of providing sufficient grazing. After 700AD Emishi usually fought on horseback and they had a reputation as master horse archers, greatly feared and respected by contemporary Japanese:

Mounted archery is the custom of the barbarians. Ten of our commoners can not stand up against one of them!

These are mounted Emishi warriors - they are best suited for the later period, as irregular LH(S) or irregular Cv(O).

This range introduce our new original approach to mounted figures; the bottom half of the rider is cast in one piece with the horse, while the top half is a separate piece, which is fixed in place by a peg that fits in a corresponding hole on the mount. This method let you easily mix and match mounts and riders for the maximum variety, and also allow the upper half of the body to be glued in almost any position from straight forward, to the side all the way to nearly facing backward in a "Parthian shot."

The vast majority of the riders are horse archers but there are also warriors armed with sword and spear in the mix, which are particularly useful for command and cavalry elements.

Please note that as we're not keen on spaghetti lances, the figures are supplied without spears. We suggest to use brass rods cut to length, or Wire Spears as sold ready made by several manufacturers. To facilitate this, the hand is modeled open and ready to accept the spear shaft - no drilling required here!

These figures are primarily intended to be used in DBM list 6 book III Emishi 500AD - 1100AD, list 7 Book III Pre-Samurai Japanese 500AD - 900AD or as allies for list 54 Book III Early Samurai 900AD - 1300AD.

The Emishi were the original inhabitants of the northern Japanese islands, and although very little is known of their appearance, our figures are as historically correct as possible to the best of our knowledge.

Foot packs contain 8 assorted foot, mounted packs contain 4 randomly assorted horse and 5 riders. The extra upper body part will give you extra freedom in choosing the composition of your elements, and also let you experiment more freely with conversions!

All packs are £1.95 GBP.
