As part of the ever-expanding 19th Century Chinese Flags Collection, artist Eric Cox has completed the first three sets of flags for the "Righteous Harmonious Fists" and the war of 1900 in China.
A limited number of the 25mm printed sets will be available from Mr. Bob Bowling of RLBPS in the Dealers Room at Historicon this week. Each set will retail for $10.00 USD, and contains from 15 to 17 individual full-color flags.
These flags, like those for the Tai-P'ing Rebellion previously released, are the last word in authenticity and detail. The Mandarin text on each flag is historically accurate and comes with full translation, all done with the help of sources from the Peoples Republic of China and expert/native speaker/reader Frontis and June Wiggins.
Each flag is an original graphic creation, not merely copied out of a book. Some flags on the market identified as "Boxer" are not even from that conflict! But these flags are the product of months of painstaking research and creative effort, and provide the last word on the subject for wargamers and historians alike.
Flags bear the many mottoes of the "Boxers," including on some the additional glyphs for "By Order of The Emperor" (which began appearing only after the fighting began in earnest in Peking).
The Spritual nature of the "Boxer" movement has not been overlooked, either. On many flags, the appropriate Triglyphs relating to their Taoist roots appear as well.
These first three Sets include flags for local Boxer "Sub-Chapters" from towns in Chi-Li Province up to and including Peking itself. The next two Sets to be released will provide flags for the other towns closer to the coast, including Tientsin. For the first time, it is possible to identify your Tuans as individual units affiliated with their local "Chapters." There are even flags for associated organizations, such as the "Big Sword" Society, and the "Red Lanterns," the Boxer Women's Corps!
This initial release - just in time for Historicon - will be duplicated in both 15mm and 6mm scale sets, and all will be availble from The (Virtual) Armchair General in the week after the convention in Lancaster, PA. Watch for the formal announcement soon!
