Uniformology is pleased to announce that Book No. 38 French Dragoons & Gendarmes de France of the Seven Years War will be published February 1st, 2011.
There were sixteen regiments of dragoons in the Royal French Army at the middle of the eighteenth century. They were generally clothed in red and wore a characteristic cap which was more associated with undress or barrack dress. Research into their dress and accoutrements shows that the dress regulations were more than confusing and after examining royal decrees and the different books of the Etat Militaire from 1748 to 1761, the 1756 "Essai Sur La Cavalerie" along with more modern sources like Pajol and Lienhart and Humbert, the results will more than interest Seven Years War researchers. In addition to the dragoons, we have included the sixteen companies of the Gendarmes de France. They ranked between the troops of the King or the Maison du Roi and the regular cavalry. Their exploits were quite famous during the early part of the 18th Century. During the Seven Years War, they fought alongside the Royal Carabiniers at the Battle of Minden.
This is the second book on the series studying the French Cavalry of the Seven Years War. As usual, Uniformology presents a detailed account of the history and dress of each regiment along with beautiful full color schematic illustrations including renditions of the famous dragoon cap.
The third book in the series on Hussars and volunteer cavalry is currently in preparation.
