Yes, you can play with three D terrain. You would have to assign each terrain item a "Dodge" score that indicates how much force is needed to destroy it.

Easy enough to convert from a grid to table top as well using 1 square = 1 inch. Obviously as in all table top games line of sight and what have you are harder to judge without the grid.
