AWE 5.0 released!
The new Arcane Warfare Excel rules have been released in their 5th Edition: AWE 5.0.
These represent historical Ancient and Medieval field battles, with 32-40 bases per side, or roughly 120 figures.
This 5th Edition is the corollary of a project that started in 2002 and has undergone such changes that the original game is hardly recognizable.
For 15mm figures, the basic play is over a 120x90cm table, representing an intermediate size between the smaller games (60x60) and larger, often lasting over 3 hours (180x120). The game’s essence vastly surpasses its midway size status, on the contrary, its hallmark is the semi-simultaneous turn system in which orders are issued on a sequence determined by initiative dice (INI) independently of the side each commander belongs to. For example a side A General issues orders, then any commander from side A or B, etc.
Shooting is exclusively on orders and all close-combat fought after both sides have moved and all orders have been spent. In a fight both sides may suffer casualties, independently of who’s apparently holding the instant edge. The result is a game that truly captures likely battle dynamics and that can nonetheless be fun.
