Cromwell's Convicts: The Death March from Dunbar 1650

Cromwell's Convicts: The Death March from Dunbar 1650 On 3 September 1650, Oliver Cromwell won a decisive victory over the Scottish Covenanters at the Battle of Dunbar – a victory that is often regarded as his finest hour – but the aftermath, the forced march of 5,000 prisoners from the battlefield to Durham, was one of the cruelest episodes in his career. Describes the battle at Dunbar, but the main focus is on the lethal week-long march of the captives that followed. Uses extensive use of archive material, retraces the route taken by the prisoners, and describes the recent archaeological excavations in Durham that has identified some of the victims and offers a graphic reminder of their fate. Includes 20 black-and-white illustrations. $35.00 USD

From Pike to Shot: The Perfection of Military Discipline – The Introduction of the Bayonet 1660-1705 Re-evaluates both the plug bayonet as a weapon and its implementation, which fundamentally changed how it impacted both the formation and tactics of all armies of the long 17th Century. Also examines contemporary privately printed drill manuals as valuable and accurate guides to identify changes in military drill; how issues of supply and demand affected both English and continental armies; and investigates the changes within the infantry battalion drill's and organization, and resulting increase in firepower. Also asserts the plug bayonet was in use with English forces during the Dunkirk campaign in the early 1660s, that the English establishment embraced the idea of the plug bayonet earlier than previously thought, and the Board of Ordnance ordered 10,000 plug bayonets in 1678. Includes eight-page color section, 46 black-and-white photos/illustrations, and many tables. $33.00 USD

Sejanus: Regent of Rome Sejanus has fascinated from ancient to more modern times. Sejanus, the emperor Tiberius' infamous Praetorian Prefect, is synonymous with overreaching ambition, murder, conspiracy, and betrayal. According to the traditional storyline, this man craved the imperial throne for himself and sought it by isolating the naive emperor in his island pleasure palace on Capri whilst using his control over the Praetorian Guard, coupled with his immense power and influence in Rome, to purge the capital of potential opponents. His victims supposedly included the emperor's son, Drusus, poisoned by his own wife who had been seduced by Sejanus. The emperor, forewarned of Sejanus' ambition, struck first. The Prefect was arrested in the Senate, strangled, and his corpse cast down the Gemonian Stairs. The study of Sejanus has generally been overshadowed by focus on Tiberius. Includes 16 black-and-white illustrations. $43.00 USD

The Dark Age of Tanks: Britain's Lost Armour 1945-1970 In the 30 years after WWII, the British army entered a period of intense technological development, although lack of surviving documentation renders a complete accounting difficult. What survives shows the British Army's struggle to use cutting-edge technology to create weapons that could crush the Soviet Union's armed forces, all the while fighting against the demands of Her Majesty's Treasury. Shows the army entertained ideas such as micro-tanks of about 20 tons in weight with two-man crews, massive 183mm anti-tank guns, devastating rocket artillery, colossal anti-tank guided missiles, and ended up on the cusp of building hover tanks. Includes 50 black-and-white illustrations. $40.00 USD

Hitler's Spanish Division

Hitler's Spanish Division Officially designated by the Wehrmacht as the 250th Infantry Division, but commonly referred to as the Azul or Blue Division after the color of Spain's Falangist (Fascist) Party, this force initially amounted to some 18,000 volunteers under the command of the fiercely anti-communist General Agustin Munoz-Grandes. Of the first 18,694 men who entrained for Germany during July 1941, 70% were from the regular army, including every officer from captain on up, and most of the rest were Spanish Civil War veterans. Examines the history, personalities, uniforms and equipment of those men and women who volunteered to serve alongside Hitler's armies. Includes full-color illustrations and rare photographs provided by survivors. $33.00 USD

Siege of Malta: 1940-42 – Images of War Series For nearly two and a half years, from June 1940 until late 1942, Malta was subjected to one Axis air raid after another. The Mediterranean island was effectively beleaguered, reliant for defense on antiaircraft guns and often-outnumbered fighter aircraft, and dependent for survival on naval supply convoys. The Axis attempted to bomb and starve Malta into submission, attacking ports, military and industrial areas, leading to Malta becoming one of the most intensively bombed areas of WWII, with well over 3,000 alerts before the end of hostilities. But against the odds and at heavy cost, Malta, vital to Allied success in North Africa, held out. Includes a special color section focusing on reminders of the battle in a series of more recent images. $25.00 USD
