The HMGS-PSW traveled to the Anaheim Hills Library in California on November 7th to continue our organization's community outreach during the Treasures of Napoleon exhibit.
RJ Galati brought a portion his Old Glory 28mm collection and, assisted by Frank Patterson, spent hours explaining Napoleon, Wellington and wargaming to a crowd of eager newcomers. Dozens of attendees crowded around the table to command a battery of guns or battalion of line infantry for a few turns. The battle ended with each flank threatening the other. During one furious artillery barrage, an armchair general almost killed the Duke of Wellington with a failed rocket battery roll. RJ and Frank had a great time, and handed out dozens of brochures for both the Muzeo and the HMGS-PSW.
The Treasures of Napoleon exhibit runs from October until Jan 8th 2010 at the Muzeo in Anaheim. This internationally acclaimed private collection of Napoleonic artifacts features over 200 pieces of memorabilia, including the folio that carried the Louisiana Purchase documents to Napoleon and the camp bed he used at Wagram. Evey room of the exhibit includes a page that focuses on Napoleon's influence on America.
The local HMGS-PSW group is hosting Napoleonic wargames at in the exhibit every Saturday from 12-4PM until Christmas. Admission to the exhibit is $13 USD. The wargame room is downstairs next to the elevator in the historic Carnegie Library building. You can stop by and play in our wargames for free, just go directly to the wargame room. Wargame participants are eligible for a coupon that gives them a 50% discount to exhibit admission. Even if Napoleonics are not your cup of tea, or gin, consider visiting the exhibit. When you visit the Treasures of Napoleon exhibit, please tell them the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society sent you.
For that matter, let them know you read about it on Bill Armintrout's The Miniatures Page. Here is the plan: Bring a print-out of this article with you and leave it at the front desk. Mark on it how many people were in your party. The museum brass will appreciate us even more if we are responsible for driving up attendance. The more they like us, the better chance we have that they will keep us in mind when booking exhibits for the future.
There are some important anniversaries that we should make sure and be prepared to observe. For example, September 15th, 2010, is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
