The origins of this book lie back in the early days of the development of matrix games. One of the earliest matrix games designed in the U.K. sought to create a campaign game about the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, and the original game was published during the early 1990s in The Nugget (the Journal of Wargame Developments) and Wargames Illustrated. The interest generated led to the development of a simple set of tabletop rules that players could use to resolve any battle that arose during their campaigns. These were also published in The Nugget and Wargames Illustrated.
Recently, interest in the original matrix game and tabletop rules has revived, and this book contains both a redesigned version of the matrix game (including a short history of the matrix game concept and an explanation about to play one) and two sets of tabletop rules (one for land warfare and one for naval warfare) based on the popular Portable Wargame system.
This book is divided into three parts and a set of appendices.
