In truth its a case of making things easy to be translated on the tabletop and for purchasers – people are looking for the figure leading the horse, and can easily spot the figure 'pulling' it along. Same as castles are normally depicted being of grey stone construction and waterways as blue in colour, its what is easily identifiable and understandable to people at a quick glance.
