Aussiejed of Eureka Miniatures writes:

The English settlers of Jamestown knew they would be facing potential starvation and hostile Native American Indians. They were well aware of the previous disastrous attempts by Sir Walter Raleigh's colonists in Pamlico Sound (1585 & 1587) that had become embroiled in local native politics, as Indians either attacked them or tried to solicit their help against rival tribes. Raleigh's second failed settlement appears to have ultimately lost this political game, being wiped out sometime before 1590.

However, the first permanent English colony at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607 found itself faced by an even greater danger - the powerful and unified 'Powhatan Confederation' of Indian tribes. This was a group of some 30 different native peoples, which had been gradually bound together by Powhatan (father of the famous Pocahontas) into a formidable alliance containing most of the tribes along the York and James rivers. Contemporary observers estimated that the combined tribes under the paramount chieftaincy could potentially raise a force of well over 2,000 warriors – a formidable prospect for the 100 or so settlers clinging to their tiny fort on the James River.

The Powhatan tribes fought hard for their lands, engaging in no less than three wars with the settlers between 1610 and 1646. They eventually earned themselves a formal treaty, but the paramount chieftaincy ceased in 1649 and it was not long before the unceasing flood of European settlers (and their accompanying diseases) had forced the Powhatans from most of their lands.
