THE BATTLE OF SPICHEREN: August 6, 1870
Account penned by a noted 19th Century British military historian remains one of the best narratives of the Battle of Spicheren. Fought in early August 1870, and like many of the battles in the opening phase of the Franco-Prussian War, this encounter battle was fought over very difficult terrain. German forces eventually dislodged the French II Corps after a heroic defense. Not only drew on the General Staff works and other official sources available at the time, but also utilized many other accounts, including regimental histories. Following a full discussion of the events of 6 August 1870, he also discusses the tactics of the battle, training, and other characteristics of the troops involved. This new edition not only includes all of the maps from the original, but also features a new essay outlining the life and military writings of Henderson, as well as added illustrations and a bibliography of the Battle of Spicheren. THE BATTLE OF WOERTH: August 6th 1870
Companion volume to the same author's Battle of Spicheren August 6th 1870 and provides an account of the 'other' Franco-Prussian War battle fought that day – Woerth (in Alsace). This opening encounter battle had the same result – the French withdrew after a courageous defense. Although briefer than his study of Spicheren, Henderson nevertheless carefully selected his sources when researching this book, again including regimental histories. He presents a detailed narrative of the battle, with additional comments about the tactics employed, and the qualities (or otherwise) of the generals and the men they led. This new expanded edition not only includes all of the maps from the original, but also features a new introduction by Duncan Rogers, as well as added illustrations and a bibliography of the Battle of Woerth.
