Battle for Turda 1944
After switching sides and declaring war on Germany, Romania's 4th Army was used by Soviet forces to help in recapturing the Transylvania area. This area had been lost to the Hungarians in 1940 and had al-ways been a very sore subject, so there was no lack of enthusiasm on the Romanian's part in wanting to take this area back. Taking advantage of free passage through Romanian territory, elements of the Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front sent forces towards the city of Cluj, the historical capital of Transylvania. They ran into the Hungarian 2nd Army that was advancing to extend their position and both sides found their advances stopped. The Soviets were surprised by the Hungarian advance and ordered the Romanian 4th Army into the area to support Soviet efforts. Mid-September saw the Soviet and Romanian forces attempt to take the important crossroads town of Turda, only to be stopped by determined resistance from the Hungarian 25th Infantry Division and 2nd Mountain Replacement Brigade. Not content with a defensive stance, both sides prepared for offensive operations. On September 19th, the Hungarians got the jump, launching an offensive using the 25th Infantry and 2nd Armored Divisions, supported by some German units. This slammed into the Soviet 4th Guards Rifle Division and though initially successful, ran into Romanian and Soviet forces that were close by preparing for their own offensive.
