Battle for Meiktila
March 19th-20th, 1945
Central Burma
With the failure of the Japanese U-Go and Ha-Go operations, the British realized that they had a great opportunity to follow up their victory and keep the pressure up on a devastated enemy. Pushing hard, the Allied forces found themselves along the Irrawaddy River.
Realizing that Japanese supplies and communications were tied to the town of Meiktila, the British devised an ambitious plan to take the town while deceptively making the Japanese believe their main drive was for Mandalay. Driving hard, the British 17th Indian Division supported by the 255th Tank Brigade quickly advanced past all impediments and took the town by March 3rd. Knowing that the Japanese would react swiftly to the threat this posed, Major General Cowan prepared his division for the battle to come.
