Keith,

you may recall I do both scales; WM is right, as beautiful as so many of these 28mm models are, I can get at least three 20mm white metal R35s from RAFM Miniatures for one of these…

Of course, they don't look near as eye-catching individually as one of these (or my AGNM R35s of which I have 3…), but conversely, I can field six of these beasties in 20mm scale for the table space one will occupy.

To me its six of one, half a dozen of the other for visual effect. I can have a really sharp platoon of three of these in 28mm supporting a platoon of really sharp 28mm French infantry from Crusader Miniatures for example, or I can field an entire company of ten 20mm RAFM R35s supporting an entire battalion of French infantry or my Tirailleurs Senegalaise, plus extras on the same table area.

Then again there's 15mm, and scales further down, in which case we're moving out of the skirmish level, and running into the grand tactical and even operational level of matters, and again, it's another sort of visual effect, and I have seen some tables laid out in 6mm that made many tables in 28mm look downright meh! thanks to the care of painting and attention to detail.

This is still a very nice rendering of the R35, and frankly, I am envious of those who are just getting started in this hobby of ours, as the sheer variety and quality of what is currently available is simply wonderful, an embarrassment of riches if you will. The newbies are having all the fun if you ask me.evil grin

Hell, I might just buy one or three of these to indulge my guilty pleasure of painting garish French camouflage patterns with roundels, playing card symbols, and funny names I can barely pronounce…evil grin

The most numerous French tank of WWII, the R35 (and its later R40 variant) would serve well during the invasion of France, and following the French defeat, they would find themselves in widespread German use - and in turn, Germany would give/sell their Italian allies over 100 of the R35. Add this tank to either your early War French, German or Italian (or even Polish, as a number were exported there, too…) armies.

Renault R35

The R35 (or Char léger Modèle 1935 R to use its official description)...

Side view of the R35

The Germans made good use of captured R35s, designating them as Pz. 35R 731 (f). In addition, the Germans also used the R35 hull as a chassis for self-propelled guns such as the catchily-titled 4.7cm PaK(t) auf anzerkampfwagen 35R (f) ohne Turm.

The R35 comes complete with opening hatch and metal French crewman. The French tanker has a separate head, and we plan for more French tank crew/heads in the not-too-distant future.

You can purchase this lovely little tank in the Warlord Games webstore.
