We use vassal to run campaigns. You can design your own maps and import them along with tokens and some light accounting markers and play with others either live or via email. But by far most vassal activity is in versions of published games (e.g., GMT, OSG) where the publishers have allowed their graphics to be used in a vassal module. The expectation is that you have the physical copy itself. There are some games that I have played more on vassal than face to face, largely because longer games can be spread over many days / weeks.
