The Best AW Cover: "What Do You Think?"

Back to Hobby News

Great War Ace writes:

Ah, the larger, full pic is much better for scrutiny. Yes, late period for sure, even without the specific reference to the battle of Nisibis. The Roman "stragglers" are explained by the "feigned retreat" that would have just occurred. The caltrops are assumed and would not of course be visible in the grass. But the doomed camel and rider are a strange detail. Did the Parthians use camelry? And would they have been mixed in with cataphracts? I notice in the larger picture that pila are soaring up from the rear ranks behind the spear (stragglers out in front could also get hurt that way!). That makes sense. So my quibble about "pila being thrown individually instead of as a volley" was itself an inaccurate assertion due to the small size of the originally posted pic….

The Art of Ancient Warfare

Have you heard about our upcoming special issue, The Art of Ancient Warfare? This new compilation will include some of the very best artwork produced for Ancient Warfare over the last 50 issues, along with quite a bit of bonus content, which covers things like the creation process, the pitfalls of illustrating the ancient world, and some background on our regular artists.

We're also planning to do a feature on AW covers. However, we don't have room to reproduce them all, which is where you come in. We've set up a poll to let you vote on your favorite cover of all time. The winner will be reproduced at full-size, and receive special attention in the book. Please let us know what you think!

The Art of Ancient Warfare will initially be made available to backers of our Ancient History Magazine Kickstarter in the fall. We'll be opening it up to everyone else sometime after that, so keep an eye out if you'd like to get your hands on this colorful new special!
