This year marks the centenary of The Great War. There have already been many books published to mark this important occasion, and over the next four years, there will doubtless be many more. They will range from general histories and biographies of commanders, through personal memoirs, to accounts of individual battles. Images of a Contemptible Little Army is rather different.
It is a pictorial guide of the men and women who served for King and Country in the War to End All Wars. The book brings together many rare and unusual photographs from the collection of well-known military illustrator Bob Marrion. Each section of the armed forces, with the women's services not forgotten, is explored separately, with a wealth of detail on the uniforms in the examples displayed.
From its pages, one learns more than just about uniforms – one is struck by the youthful innocence of those who helped make up an army that was anything but contemptible.
