The long-awaited third volume in the popular Thirty Years War series by the late William P. Guthrie is available now from Caliver Books.
From the introduction:
In my earlier books, Battles of the Thirty Years War and The Later Thirty Years War, I was necessarily focused on the war in Central Europe and Germany, to the exclusion of important events in Eastern Europe, the Baltic, Italy, and France. This shortcoming is remedied in the current work.
The period 1440-1690 saw the replacement of muscle-powered feudal arrays with regular armies relying on firearms; the Thirty Years War, 1618-48, was an essential link in this chain of development. The first half of the conflict, 1618 through 1635, was marked by the eclipse of the "tercio" system, as exemplified by Tilly, by the linear system, associated with the meteoric career of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden.
