Bocage sets have always been one of our favorite pieces of terrain to fight across here at Warlord – and our friends at War World Scenics have produced six fabulous kits for us, combining quality resin with a variety of different foliage materials, allowing you to easily create your own bocage-filled 28mm battlefields!
In Normandy, the bocage acquired a particular significance in the Chouannerie and during the Battle of Normandy, as it made progress against the German defenders difficult. The German army used the sheltered, sunken lanes to create strongpoints and defenses to stop the American troops, particularly effectively on the Cotentin Peninsula and around the town of Saint-Lô.

Martyn from War World Scenics offered a few hints and tips on how to get the most from your Bocage kit. First, make sure you wash all the resin components with warm soapy water. Then (once dry), spray with a matt black base primer spray (shake the can well before use, to ensure a nice even coat). I then painted the base color using Vallejo Model Color Smoke (70939).
Second coat is a drybrush of Vallejo's Model Color German Cam (70826). I mix ¾ of 70826 and ¼ Model Color Ivory (70918) (be careful not to add too much Ivory), again using a drybrushing technique. I then add all three colors together to get a good wood color for the trees.
When it comes to the foliage, I use superglue. I pull apart small chunks and build the different colors up. Keep the clumps small, as it looks a lot better. Keep building the foliage up until you're happy with the look and height.
The trees I spray with War World Scenics' Tree and Bush Foliage Spray. Leave the glue to go tacky – and then rub the foliage onto the tree. Build it up little-by-little until you're happy with the look.
