Andrew Walters: actually I believe there is a farly strong consensus among historians/archeologists that Phoenician ships did in fact have shields hanging on from gunwales. This is based on several sources both literary and on paintings, vases, models etc.
These shield would not get in the way of rowers because of the different structures of phoenician ships, which had an additional deck with bullwarks which is were shields would be hanging from.
This is why I also added shields when designing my range, and also made an effort to underline other differences fro the Greek trireme design. You can get more details here if you care link
On the subject of the size of shield, well.. I did not see David's ships but mine definitely show quite outsized shields! But as you said, with realistic proportion you would need a microscope to spot them…
