The Panzer IV Ausf F series was the heaviest tank in the German arsenal at the start of the war with the Soviet Union. The major improvement of Panzer IV F series was the all-around increase in armor thickness, in comparison with earlier models.
Another improvement that was introduced in order to combat the superiority of KV-1 and T-34 encountered on the Eastern Front was a new gun; the long-barreled 7.5cm KwK40 L/43. The up-gunned version of Panzer IV F was known as the Panzer IV F2, while those vehicles that retained the original short-barreled 7.5cm KwK37 L/24 were designated the Panzer IV F1.
