Wargaming Campaigns

Wargaming Campaigns. Henry Hyde tome covers campaigns. Although campaigns can be very rewarding, many wargamers are deterred by the need to produce maps and devise mechanisms for strategic movement, intelligence, logistics, recruiting reinforcements, keeping track of casualties, etc. This book offers advice, suggestions, and even a full set of campaign rules useful for any period up to AD 1900. Includes 200+ photos, maps and diagrams.

Most miniature wargames take the form of simulating a single battle with the opponents either winning or losing, and that's that until the next game. Such games can be a fun test of tactical skill, but it can be even more rewarding if they form part of a wider campaign. In a campaign, the players commanding the forces have to make the decisions at the strategic level that determine the context of any battles that occur. The outcome of these battles will, in turn, have strategic consequences for the ongoing campaign. $70.00 USD

Conquerors of the Roman Empire: The Vandals

Conquerors of the Roman Empire: The Vandals. On 31 December AD 406, a group of German tribes crossed the Rhine, pierced the Roman defensive limes, and began a rampage across Roman Gaul, sacking cities such as Metz, Arras and Strasbourg. Foremost amongst them were the Vandals and their closest allies, the Alans. Their search for a new homeland took them on the most remarkable odyssey. The Romans were unable to stop them from marching the breadth of Gaul, crossing the Pyrenees, and making themselves masters of Spain. However, this Kingdom of the Vandals and Alans soon came under intense pressure from Rome's Visigothic allies. In 429, under their new king, Gaiseric, they crossed the straits of Gibraltar to North Africa. They quickly overran this rich Roman province and established a stable kingdom. Taking to the seas, they soon dominated the Western Mediterranean and raided Italy, famously sacking Rome itself in 455. Eventually, however, they were utterly conquered by Belisarius in 533 and vanished from history. Focus on the evolution of Vandal armies and warfare. $30.00 USD

Offers concise comparative biographies of the individuals who wielded power in the final decades of the Western Roman Empire, from the assassination of Aetius in 454, to the death of Julius Nepos in 480. The book is divided into four parts. The first sets the background to the period, including brief histories of Stilicho (395-408) and Aetius (425-454), explaining the nature of the empire and the reasons for its decline. The second details the lives of Ricimer (455-472) and his great rival Marcellinus (455-468) by focusing on the stories of the numerous emperors that Ricimer raised and deposed. The third deals with the Patricians Gundobad (472-3) and Orestes (475-6), as well as explaining how the barbarian general Odoacer came to power in 476. The final part outlines and analyses the Fall of the West and the rise of barbarian kingdoms in France, Spain and Italy. $30.00 USD

From Ushant to Gibraltar: The Channel Fleet 1778-1783

From Ushant to Gibraltar: The Channel Fleet 1778-1783. In 1778, when the expected war finally broke with France, Lord Sandwich, the long-serving First Lord of the Admiralty, had to find the resources to match the French fleet not only in the Channel but in other theaters of war such as the West Indies, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. In addition, the Royal Navy had to protect Britain's extensive maritime commerce, covering the large inbound and outbound convoys on which the country's economy depended. This book is a study of the men who led and the men who managed, both afloat and ashore, the Channel Fleet. $45.00 USD

Burma Victory 1944-1945: Photographs from Wartime Archives Images of War series. General Stilwell's ad hoc force of Merrill's Marauders, American-trained Chinese divisions, Kachin guerrillas, and General Wingate's Chindits conducted a northern Burmese offensive that led to the coup de main seizure of Myitkyina's airfield in May 1944. In August 1944, after a protracted siege, Myitkyina town on the Irrawaddy River fell to the Allies. At the same time, elements of General Slim's 14th Army were mounting a defense of northeastern India at Imphal and Kohima against Imperial Japan's 15th Army; Operation U-Go, led by General Mutaguchi, from March to July 1944. Thereafter, the Allies began two major campaigns. First, the northern Burmese Sino-American offensive re-opened the land supply route to China via a newly-built Burma Road, which replaced the American Air Transport Command's airlift that had kept Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's Chinese forces supplied. The second offensive was by General Bill Slim's multi-national British 14th Army under, which advanced south-east through the Arakan. The Forgotten Army eventually re-occupied Mandalay and Rangoon. $29.00 USD

Great Naval Battles of the Pacific War: The Official Admiralty Accounts: Midway, Coral Sea, Java Sea, Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf

Great Naval Battles of the Pacific War: The Official Admiralty Accounts: Midway, Coral Sea, Java Sea, Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf. The accounts here, compiled for and on behalf of the Admiralty, were written either during or immediately after the end of the war, before historians had begun to give their assessments of these momentous events. These accounts were written for internal consumption, to guide and instruct naval officers. It was never intended that they would be released to the general public. As such, there was no jingoistic drum beating, no axes to grind, and no new angles to try and find. The authors of these accounts relate each battle, move by move, as they unfolded, accurately and dispassionately. $43.00 USD
