OPERATION LUTTICH
Mortain, France
August 7th, 1944Desperately looking to stem the Allied breakout into Brittany, Hitler dreamed up a bold armored thrust through the town of Mortain to retake the port city of Avranches, thereby cutting the Allied spearhead and eliminating the now-pocketed Allied force. A sound plan in theory, but one that badly failed to take into account the realities of the current situation on the Western Front. The panzer divisions earmarked for the counterattack were worn down from months in the front lines and, in many cases, still in the front lines. The Allies had total air superiority, so pulling forces out of the line and massing them for an attack would be problematic at best. It was also believed that the U.S. forces in the immediate area were spread out and weak. This too, was not necessarily the case.
Struggling to carry out the Fuhrer's plan, a worn and disorganized force took shape, and as forward units moved to infiltrate U.S. lines in the darkness of August 7th, it would be up to the skill of the German soldiers themselves for this attack to have any chance of success.
The 30th Division put up one hell of a fight against a very determined opponent! So much so, that we decided to put together a scenario for you all to try your hand at the engagement. Look for it in the Free Scenarios folder on the PANZERKORPHQ Yahoo! Group, or visit our website at panzerkorps.com.
Although designed for our divisional-level WWII Panzer Korps system, players have been known to use the scenarios with company- and platoon-level games with some modification.
