Up the Nile is a set of wargames rules for fighting the Mahdist Wars in the Sudan. They have been developed to allow players to game this fascinating conflict with a set of rules that are quick to learn and fun to play. The rules have easily understood and plausible mechanisms reflecting the tactics, strengths and weaknesses of the combatants, resulting in games that are never predictable but always a challenge.
Up the Nile will give you a fast-paced, enjoyable game where the guarantee of success cannot be taken for granted. It is a game of risk and high stakes where triumph and disaster await in equal measure.
Although primarily set during the early British intervention in the Sudan, these rules can be used for the later campaigns and the earlier Anglo-Egyptian war of 1882. The colonial period lends itself well to solo play, and this is especially true for the Sudan. A section of the rules has been dedicated to cover this alternative aspect of gaming, with the Mahdist forces being controlled by the rules.
Tighten your chin strap, dust off your fez, stitch colored patches onto your Jibbah, and campaign Up the Nile. Here you will find either glory or death with your bones left bleaching under the blistering sun, lost forever in the rocky deserts of the Sudan.
Based on the very successful Bonnie Blue Flag ACW attrition-based rules system. Suitable for any scale. (No need to re-base your figures!)
