Battle of Vevi, Greece
April 12th, 1941German forces invaded Greece and Yugoslavia in support of their erstwhile ally Italy which had fumbled its own misplaced invasion of Greece and had become bottled up in Albania. A small force of Commonwealth troops had arrived in Greece to support the defense but the situation was changing quickly as German forces outflanked and/or maneuvered with speed past defensive lines. Realizing that a German 'Blitzkrieg" into the Florina Valley area would unhinge as well as isolate Greek forces still trying to fall back.
A mixed group of Australians, New Zealanders, British and Greeks were hastily brought together and dubbed 'Mackay Force' after the local commander. Their job was to hold the Klidi Pass area and its road and rail access to the towns south where the ground became more open and favorable to mobile operations. To add to the issue was a lingering winter that saw bitter cold winds and the occasional snow flurries making the situation even more uncomfortable for the harried Allied troops. German forces started making probing attacks starting on the 10th and had set the 12th for their assault to take the heights and clear the area so that mobile forces could break though. On the cold, misty morning of 12th, without an initial artillery preparation to alert the Allies, the LSSAH Brigade made its assault on the initial hill points to gain the high ground.
The cold hard ground will be difficult to fight over! We have provided this scenario for all to try. This one features a little-gamed part of the war and an interesting Allied force. Although designed for use with the divisional WWII system Panzer Korps, players can use it for setting up smaller engagements.
