That's a tricky one Covert Walrus. For years eople have argued about where does Fantasy become SF/Fantasy and when does that transition into 'Space Opera', SF and 'hard' SF.

I'm more of a fan of hard SF (like Drake's Slammers, not suprisingly) but can gernally hack SF and even some 'Space Opera'. My SF gaming interests can – and do – span all three and beyond (Daleks and Star Trek being notable inclusions) but the Slammer's material is definitely 'hard' SF, I would say.

On that basis, I'd want to be able, on some level, to be able to 'scientifically' justify most of the concepts and assumptions with only too much techno-babble.

On the naming front, I don't disagree: I always used to say 'SF' thinking 'Sci-Fi' to be terribly dated but – in the last ten years – there has been an almost re-embracing of 'Sci-Fi' as a term.

However, I think it's retro and fairly kitch and avoid using it whenever I can for just that reason :)

More Slammers activity for fans!

Firstly, rules and cards. Miniature Wargames recently printed my article about using power armor within the Hammer's Slammers - the Crucible rules.

Cards for the article in three scales are now available for free download here.

Secondly, two new galleries have been posted here.

Waldheim Dragoons GD806 APCs with tomes 5cm Powerguns

For 15mm gamers, there's an Old Crow Waldheim Dragoons page, with Old Crow infantry and tanks plus GZG towed artillery pieces.

John Hodson's Broglie's Legion M12A1 tank destroyers

For 28mm fans, there is an excellent selection of shots from John Hodson of the Southern Maryland Wargames Club: his painted vehicles, scenery and photography. He has Slammers, Broglies and other units. Contact details are posted here.
