Face Another Foe: Wargaming the Lace Wars cover

Some similarities to Mad Dogs and Englishmen, but Face Another Foe moves away from single-figure basing and figure removal. The troop types are more varied too, but the importance of the general is maintained, as is the use of bonus cards. Also includes a broad range of army lists. Some forces are deliberately earmarked as small armies. This means that the force was involved in a limited conflict in terms of scale, or that the army represents a national contingent of a much larger coalition force. $24.00 USD

Irun and Hondarribia in the War Against the French Convention: 1793-1794 In 1789, the French Revolution abolished the monarchy and brought great political and social changes, choosing a parliament called the National Convention that drafted a new Constitution. The European monarchies, feeling threatened, formed a coalition, with Spain joining in August 1792. On March 7, 1793 the French National Convention declared war on Spain. Two campaigns were prosecuted at the border of the Bidasoa, Irun, and Hondarribia. The first, from April 1793 until February 1794, favored the Spanish, in which the fort of Hendaia was destroyed and the Spanish dominated the two banks of the river with fortified posts in Biriatu and Tellatueta. However, during the second, the French, reinforced with many troops, advanced to occupy Baztan in June of 1794, and the successfully captures San Marcial in Irun and Hondarribia Square. Left for Dead at Nijmegen: The True Story of an American Paratrooper in World War II Recalls the larger-than-life experiences of an American paratrooper, Gene Metcalfe, who served in the 82nd Airborne during WWII. From his recruitment into the military at Camp Grant to his training with the 501st Paratroop Infantry Regiment at Camp Toccoa, it wasn't until D-Day itself that he first arrived in England to join the 508th PIR. When Metcalfe boarded the C-47 which would drop him at Groesbeek Heights, just outside of Nijmegen, Holland, he was handed a box of condoms by an over-confident British lieutenant. He was to be among the first to jump into what should have been a picture-book meadow, free of German troops. Instead, it was defended by three German anti-aircraft cannon emplacements. As he jumped into a hail of bullets and exploding shells he watched his plane roll over and plummet into the ground. It was at that moment he realized the condoms had either been a bad joke or the planners of Operation Market Garden had seriously underestimated German resistance. Gene was listed as KIA and left for dead by his patrol, who presumed the worst when they saw his injuries from a shell explosion. $33.00 USD

Autopsy of an Unwinnable War: Vietnam Hapnoski contends the Vietnam War was lost before the first American shot was fired. In fact, it was lost before the first French Expeditionary Corps shot, almost two decades earlier, and was finally lost when the South Vietnamese fought partly, then entirely, on their own. Written by a combatant in six large battles and many smaller firefights, plus a full range of pacification duties, the book examines the futility of the 30-year war in Vietnam. This covers those who lived and revealed by the people inside Vietnam who were directly involved in the war: from leaders in high positions, down to the jungle boots and sandals level of the fighters, and among the Vietnamese people who were living the war. Because of what was happening inside Vietnam itself, no matter what policies and directives came out of Paris or Washington, or the influences in Moscow or Beijing, it is about a Vietnamese idea which would eventually triumph over bullets. $33.00 USD

Gloire & Empire #83 In the Vendee, and more generally in the West, the decisions of the constituent Assembly are not always well accepted. Here, more than elsewhere, decrees on the Civil Constitution affecting the clergy are poorly received. The episcopate is not the only one to resist, since on September 12, 1790, agricultural workers took on the National Guard. Very quickly, other violent demonstrations accompany the edicts.
