Battle of Beda Fomm
February 6th, 1941
Beda Fomm, Libya
On the night of 7/8 December 1940, the Western Desert Force under General O'Connor moved some 70 miles to the jump-off points and unleashed Operation Compass upon the Italians dug in around Sidi Barrani early on the 9th. The British attack would completely rout Italian forces, and create a running chase between Italian forces attempting to fall back towards Tripoli and the thin British mobile forces attempting to cut them off. Early on the morning of February 5th, a small flying column was sent to create a blocking position and stop the Italians as they retreated from Benghazi along the coastal road. Arriving little more than 30 minutes before the lead elements of the retreating Italian columns came into sight, this small force now found itself blocking the entire remnants of the Italian 10th Army, and was successful in defeating the initial attacks of various Italian forces attempting to break through. Having been reinforced by elements of the 4th Armored Brigade, this small British force now found itself on February 6th facing a strengthened Italian assault force led by several tank battalions. The fighting would prove extremely intense and, as the day progressed, increasingly desperate.
