Our latest releases for the Wars of the French Revolution are the French Dragoons as they appeared between 1792 and 1799.

28mm French Dragoons

The unusual feature of the heavy cavalry in this period is their lack of a carbine. The 1777 musket they would usually carry was redistributed to the volunteer infantry battalions in 1793. As far as we can tell, the cavalry did not receive replacements in any quantity until 1800. Consequently, we have made all our figures without them.

One other item we decided to add was the sword belt suspended from the right shoulder, bandolier-style, for the campaign figures we have included in the set. Although not the regulation way of wearing the sword belt (which was normally around the waist), this fashion was worn by many troopers up until the introduction of the new waist belt in 1801. Though General La Houssaye ordered his entire dragoon division to wear their sabres "bandolier-style" when both mounted and dismounted as late as 1807. The campaign figures also carry light cavalry swords and wear non-regulation trousers.

These figures can be used to represent any of the 21 regiments of dragoons in the French forces during the period, and will allow the painter to finally use some of the more unusual military colors in their palette. Facing colors included pink and orange, as well as yellow, scarlet and crimson.

The catalogue details are:
