Paper Wars: Issue 91 – Jihad: The Rise Of Islam 632-731 A.D cover

Paper Wars: Issue 91 – Jihad: The Rise of Islam 632-731 A.D Game-type simulation of the first century of the Islamic expansion after the death of Mohammad, the prophet and founder of the Islamic religion. During this period, the holy war of conquest and religious conversion of non-Arab peoples were the mainsprings of Islam, and the Arabs progressed from a religious force to a secular great power. Jihad! covers these events on a grand strategic scale, with each turn representing five years, and military units representing entire armies. The game is for one or two players, with one player controlling the Islamic forces and the other controlling all of the various opposing forces, including the Byzantines, Persians, Berbers, Franks, Goths, Kaazars, Sinds and Turks. Players alternate recruiting forces, engaging in religious conversion, moving their forces, and engaging in combat. The objective of the game is for the Muslim player to at least duplicate the conquests of Islam over the historical time frame, while for the opposing player the object is to prevent that level of advance by Islam.

This volume is related to the Russian Army during the Czar Nicolas Ist era, and is about the Carabiniers, Jagers, Rifles, and Cuirassiers uniforms in use from 1825 to 1855. Antipater's Dynasty: Alexander the Great's Regent and his Successors cover

Antipater's Dynasty: Alexander the Great's Regent and His Successors Antipater was a key figure in the rise of Macedon under Philip II and instrumental in the succession of Alexander III (the Great). Alexander entrusted Antipater with ruling Macedon in his long absence and he defeated the Spartans in 331 BC. After Alexander's death, he crushed a Greek uprising and became regent of the co-kings, Alexander's mentally impaired half-brother (Philip III Arrhideus) and infant son (Alexander IV). He brokered a settlement between the contending Successors but died in 319 BC, having first appointed Polyperchon to succeed as regent in preference to his own sons. Antipater's eldest son Cassander later became regent of Macedon but eventually had Alexander IV killed and made himself king. Three of his sons in turn briefly succeeded him but could not retain the throne. Antipater's female heirs are shown to be just as important, both as pawns and surprisingly independent players in this Macedonian game of thrones. The saga ends with the failed bid by Nikaia, the widow of Antipater's great grandson Alexander of Corinth, to become independent ruler of Macedon. $40.00 USD

The Life of John Andre: The Redcoat Who Turned Benedict Arnold John Andre was head of the British Army's Secret Service in North America as the Revolutionary War entered its most bitter and, ultimately, decisive phase. In 1780, he masterminded the defection of a high-ranking American officer – General Benedict Arnold. Arnold – his name forever synonymous with treason in American folklore – had recently been appointed commander of West Point and agreed, through Andre, to turn over to the British this strategically vital fort on the upper reaches of the Hudson River. Control of the fort would interrupt lines of communication between New England and the southern colonies, seriously impeding military operations against the British. The plan was also to simultaneously kidnap General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. By these two masterstrokes, the British believed they could end rebel resistance. Includes 15 black-and-white and 15 color illustrations. $33.00 USD

Let Us Die Like Men: The Battle of Franklin, November 30, 1864 John Bell Hood had done his job too well. In the fall of 1864, the commander of the Confederate Army of Tennessee had harassed Federal forces in north Georgia so badly that the Union commander, William T. Sherman, decided to abandon his position. During his subsequent March to the Sea, Sherman's men lived off the land. Rather than confront the larger Federal force directly, Hood chose instead to strike northward into Tennessee. There, he hoped to cripple the Federal supply infrastructure and the Federal forces that still remained there – the Army of the Cumberland under George Thomas. Hood hoped to defeat Thomas' army in detail and force Sherman to come northward to the rescue. On November 30, in a small country town called Franklin, Hood caught part of Thomas' army outside of its stronghold of Nashville. But what began as a promising opportunity for the outnumbered Confederate army soon turned grim. Includes 150 images and maps. $15.00 USD

Fighting Fox Company: The Battling Flank of the Band of Brothers Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division has become one of the most famous small units in U.S. history, thanks to Stephen Ambrose's superb book Band of Brothers, followed by portrayals in film. However, to date little has been heard of Fox Company of that same regiment – the men who fought alongside Easy Company through every step of the war in Europe, and who had their own stories to tell. Told primarily through the words of participants, Fighting Fox Company takes the reader through some of the most horrific close-in fighting of the war, beginning with the chaotic nocturnal paratrooper drop on D-Day. After fighting through Normandy, the drop into Holland saw prolonged ferocious combat, and even more casualties; and then during the Battle of the Bulge, Fox Company took its place in line at Bastogne during one of the most heroic against-all-odds stands in U.S. history. Panzer Rollen: The Logistics of a Panzer Division From Primary Sources Captured German field manuals translated and published by the U.S. Military Intelligence Division are crucial in offering a perception of the intelligence provided to Allied fighters. The two volumes gathered together in this publication were originally published by the German War Office and therefore are particularly valuable, as they also provide a rare glimpse into the methodology underlying the operation of an armored division from the German perspective. Comprising of two supplementary field manuals, this book is essential reading for any military history enthusiast. $20.00 USD

The Green Berets in the Land of a Million Elephants The Secret War in Laos was one of the first Long Wars for special operations, spanning a period of about 13 years. It was one of the largest CIA-paramilitary operations of the time, and kept out of the view of the American public until now. Between 1959 and 1974, Green Berets were covertly deployed to Laos to prevent a communist takeover or at least preserve the kingdom's neutrality. $33.00 USD
