Battle of GEMBLOUX
Belgium
May 15th, 1940

The previous three days had seen bitter fighting between the two French DLMs (Division Legere Mechanique) and the Panzers of XVI Korp. This was the first great tank battle, and the French acquitted themselves well but suffered heavily from the German Luftwaffe. Though badly battered, the two French divisions fought a delaying action that allowed the 1e DM (Division Marocaine) and 15e  DIM (Division d'Infanterie Motorisee) to march some 150km and then deploy around the small but important city of Gembloux. Using the natural defensive power of the railroad embankment, the French dug in and with adequate artillery support, waited for the German onslaught. Initially believing that the French were in full retreat, German forces pushed forward not expecting to meet any serious resistance in the Gembloux area. Soon, the heavy rain of French artillery would dispel this notion. The Battle for Gembloux had begun.
