I paid my fifteen bucks and am very happy with the book. Obviously many hours of work were invested in its creation and it focuses on a campaign that has had little attention.

Ferdinand of Brunswick
Price: $15.00 USD

Publisher: Timothy T. Tilson

Ferdinand of Brunswick features ten historical miniatures scenarios, covering the fighting in western Germany in the Seven Years War. These scenarios are designed to be played in an evening (around three hours), with a clear winner after the last turn. You need a reasonable number of figures. For example, the most French infantry battalions required is 16. Some scenarios cover an entire small battle, such as Mehr. Other scenarios cover the most important portion of a major battle, such as the evening attack at Vellinghausen. In others, I selectively reduced the forces in a battle. For example at Krefeld, I used about 66% of the actual number of battalions. The most famous battle, Minden, is not included. I simply could not find a way to make the French cavalry's frontal assaults on the Allied infantry an interesting/balanced scenario. Trying to do the entire battle would require way more troops, time and terrain than most gamers can muster. Victory is decided by Victory Points (VP), which assures there is a clear winner. The VP are based on what the respective armies were trying to accomplish. Each scenario was playtested four or more times using Black Powder and 15mm figures. However, they can be played with any scale of figures, provided you use a battalion-based set of rules.

The scenarios are as follows:

  • Hastenback (Chevert's flank assault)
  • Krefeld (the Crown Prince's flank assault)
  • Sanderhausen (the entire battle)
  • Mehr (the entire battle)
  • Lutterberg (the Franco-Saxon assault on the Allied left flank)
  • Bergen (the 10AM attack)
  • Warburg (the Crown Prince's flank assault)
  • Kloster Kamp (the dawn assault on the Auvergne regiment)
  • Vellinghausen (the evening attack on the Allied camp)
  • Wilhelmsthal (the Allied assault on the Comte de Stainville)
