While not, perhaps, one of the first nations that would be thought of as participating in the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark-Norway was a very important consideration in the status quo in the Baltic. Trying desperately to either remain neutral or join with Great Britain under acceptable terms, they were continually thrown into the French sphere of influence and fought a number of campaigns as their ally.
Most notable, of course, was their role in the Northern German Campaign of 1813, but they were also involved in earlier actions in the same area, along with two invasions of Norway and two battles of Copenhagen. The armies of both countries were quite small, but were actually very professional, and gave a very good account of themselves, despite what many historians would have us believe.
In this book, I have tried to comprehensively describe the main standing armies of both kingdoms along with many of the non-line, militia, volunteer and civic guard units that existed as well. These armies have not been well described in the English language in this depth before, and I hope this book will set this unfortunate situation straight.
