The turreted monitor style shis were generally considered to be inferiour to the more conventional broadside format ironclads when it came to engaging shore batteries. The broadside format simply allowed more guns on target. The low decks of the monitors also would alow plunging fire from elevated gun batteries, which they were insufficently armored to withstand.

Oh I understand the concept perfectly, I was just speaking to the common* (mis)perception that the ironclads were these invincible war-godesses of the seas that were only vulnerable to their own unseaworthiness.

1/200 U.S.S. Keokuk Paper Model

USS Keokuk Paper Model

From Heinkel Models

In service just over four months and only officially commissioned for one of the months, the USS Keokuk was an experimental ironclad steamer of the U.S. Navy. Named for the City of Keokuk in the state of Iowa, the Keokuk was built in New York City and launched in December 1862. As being one of the first warships to be constructed completely of iron, using wood for the deck planks, the Keokuk was powered by nine steam engines and had two twin-cylinder main propulsion engines which provided a top speed of nine knots. While engaged in the first Battle of Charleston Harbor in April of 1863, the Keokuk took on heavy Confederate fire when less than 600 yards from Fort Sumter. Taking more than 90 hits, the Keokuk sank the morning of April 8th, 1863, off of Morris Island. Shortly after, the Confederate forces salvaged the guns from the Keokuk, working only at night, and were able to use the guns as coastal defense guns.

This paper model builds the USS Keokuk as either a waterline or full-hull ironclad model.

Paper Model Details: Over 140 parts on four pages, including formers for waterline or full hull version, wire guides, bi-fold decking details, life boat parts, parts for a stand and two pages of instructional diagrams. Degree of Difficulty: 4/5.
