The Portable Wargame Compendium

The Portable Wargame evolved over several years, and the first book about it was published in 2017. Several more have followed, and the rules have proven popular with wargamers who want to fight battles on a regular basis but whose resources of time and space are limited.

Over time, several variants have been written, some of which have been published. The most recent innovation has been the development of the fast-play, 3 x 3 Portable Wargame (FP3 x 3PW for short), which uses a three-by-three gridded tabletop and a maximum of six units (plus a general) per side. Since this new version of the rules was launched in early 2022, it has sparked a lot of interest and has generated a rapid growth in new sets of period-specific rules.

The Portable Wargame Compendium has been compiled from contributions from members of the Portable Wargaming community. The Compendium has been edited by Bob Cordery, and includes contributions from David Barnes, Justin Barrett, Bob Cordery, Mark Cordone, Arthur Harman, Marc Pavone, Martin Rapier, and Mike Taber.

This Book Contains Several Sets of Portable Wargame Rules, Including:

  • The Snakes & Ladders Campaign System
  • Swords, Sorcery, and Squares: A Fantasy variant of the Portable Wargame
  • The Portable 18th Century Horse & Musket Wargame Rules
  • The original fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Wargame Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Colonial & Late 19th Century Wargame Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Eastern Front Infantry Combat Wargame Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable World War Two Operational-level Wargame Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable 1st Punic War Wargame Campaign
  • It is very fine on paper, but there is no such thing in the field: Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable English Civil War Wargame Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Little Wars Rules
  • Fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Epic Sci-Fi Wargame Rules
  • Generalship and Army Composition in fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Wargames
  • Flank Marches/Maneuvers in fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Wargames
  • A method for generating terrain for Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Wargames
  • Pre-generated terrain for fast-play 3 x 3 Portable Wargames
