Used by British/Commonwealth forces in the North African Campaign to increase weapon mobility. Various Portee designs were produced for both the 2-pounder and the 6-pounder anti-tank guns. While intended to simply carry the gun, the weapons were eventually fired from the back as self-propelled artillery. While it gave the weapon mobility, the vehicle was unarmored, and the gun crews were wide open to return fire or even shell fragments. 2pdr portees were used by British armored divisions in North Africa from Sept 1941 to July 1942, usually as part of motorized infantry battalions, and were organized into batteries of three troops of four guns. They were used by 6th Armored Div/10th Btn Rifle Brigade Motor Btn until May 1943.
