3mm IS my scale of choice!

Can we hope for Late Imperial Romans?

Mostly at this scale I think all the barbarians will look the same, but Late Romans are quite different.

Marian Republican and early Empire Romans I think are "close enough" at 3 mm scale…

Richard has been painting an entire Roman Legion, and here it is. It is not as crazy as it sounds, honestly!

One of the great benefits of very small scale figures, 3mm being the smallest that can accurately represent specific units and still be identified, is that they can be deployed in very large numbers and still fit on a wargames table. A full legion deployed in three lines covers only 80cm by about 30cm deep. Having started the range of 3mm ancients, we have been playing around with different ways to use them. Richard has always liked the idea of a 1:1 legion (he also has some ideas about 1:1 phalanxes which may follow next). Painting the legion was a bit of a project, but with a few late evenings, was finished in just under two weeks, and Richard still seems to be mostly sane.

The one-to-one Caesarian Roman Legion consists of one double-strength first cohort (960 figures), nine standard cohorts (480 figures each), one cavalry unit of 120 figures, one eaglebearer stand (3 figures, with 16 bodyguard - would you leave the eagle un-protected?), one legate with vexilium and five cavalry bodyguard/messengers and two tribunes with vexilium, mounted messenger, and eight bodyguard/response squad. That is a total of 5,315 infantry figures and 133 mounted figures.

You can find our growing range of 3mm ancients here.

More figures will be following in the next weeks, along with some 3mm War of the Spanish Succession figures.

We hope you like 'em. We've got a one-minute video of the Legion on our Facebook page.
