Uniform Guides…

Army of the Kingdom of Westphalia

THE ARMY OF THE KINGDOM OF WESTPHALIA 1807-1813: Another terrific, well-illustrated book from Partizan Press. The Army in the Napoleonic wars was not large, consisting of, at most, nine infantry and six cavalry regiments, four light infantry battalions, six artillery companies, and a Royal Guard. It was used to form the complete VIII Corps of the Grande Armee in 1812. Jerome was a bit of a dandy and loved to create 'showy' uniforms, and so some of the uniforms described in this book are very elaborate and some of the nicest from the period. One volume, 152 pages, $55.00 USD

THE HUNGARIAN ARMY: 1848-1849: The Hungarian government spared no efforts in raising troops, giving them uniforms and arming and equipping them with modern weapons, and when that was not possible, anything that could be pressed into service. Some troops carried the latest percussion weapons, while others had pikes and scythes. Cavalry were given, or brought with them, axes and whips! From Partizan Press. Illustrated with original color plates by Ron Poulter. One volume, 80 pages, $30.00 USD

JAPANESE WAR ART AND UNIFORMS: 1853-1930: This beautifully illustrated book with 320+ b/w and color illustrations reviews the extraordinary evolution of Japan's military institutions at a period of enormous transformation. Conversely, as this book shows with many fine color plates, Japanese art deeply influenced emergent impressionist Western artists. The uniforms, equipment and ships are shown with much realism while keeping the tradition of great art. For the first time in art history as well as military history, this book documents what the prints show thanks to extremely rare early military regulations and related documents whose illustrations are also exquisite if totally unknown. One volume, 240 pages, $70.00 USD

Napoleonic Art of Keith Rocco

THE NAPOLEONIC ART OF KEITH ROCCO For Keith Rocco, the emphasis is not on the appearance of the landscape or panoramas, but rather the human drama that occurs when men are facing death, so many of his paintings focus on the moment, the incident. His empathy is for the rank and file, for the underdog, for the soldiers who willingly follow others and do incredible things, despite the possible outcome. One volume, 64 pages, $25.00 USD

PUERTO RICO 1797 – La batalla por las Antillas and BAECULA e ILIPA 208-206 a.c. – Escipion Conqusita Hispania: The latest installments of Warriors and Battles includes a multitude of color and black-and-white illustrations and maps. [Spanish Text] $24.00 USD each.

REVOLUTIONS, CIVIL WARS and COUPS D'ETAT: Internal Disturbances in Paraguay during the 20th Century: Paraguay fought in two of the three major wars between sovereign Latin American states which have occurred during the two centuries since they gained their independence, including the bloody war of the Triple Alliance (against Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil) and the Chaco War, in which it resoundingly trounced Bolivia. One volume, 168 pages, Partizan Press, $50.00 USD

BURGOYNE AND THE SARATOGA CAMPAIGN: His Papers: Cubbison presents the papers that Burgoyne gathered preparatory to his appearance before Parliament, together with Cubbison's own interpretive narrative of the campaign, based on these documents and other sources. The papers, most of them published here for the first time, comprise Burgoyne's correspondence with the Governor General of Canada, the British Secretary of State for America, and the commander of the British army during the Saratoga expedition. The letters and reports outline the campaign's political organization and planning, logistical preparations, and implementation. One volume, 408 pages, $45.00 USD [available in early 2012]

A PERFECT GIBRALTAR: The Battle for Monterrey, Mexico, 1846: The dramatic story of the U.S. Army's first major encounter with urban warfare, with 27 black-and-white illustrations and seven maps. Chris D. Dishman conveys in a vivid narrative the intensity and drama of the Battle of Monterrey, which marked the first time U.S. troops engaged in prolonged urban combat. Future Civil War generals and West Point graduates fought desperately alongside rough Texan, Mississippian, and Tennessean volunteers. General Taylor engineered one of the army's first wars of maneuver at Monterrey by sending the bulk of his troops against the weakest part of the city. Embedded press reporters wrote eyewitness accounts of the action for readers back in the States. One volume, 344 pages, $35.00 USD
