a giant, sprawling, glorious mess of a 4X boardgame.

That is very accurate. Clever sequence and mechanics, but so many different elements that it is hard to keep track. We've played twice, about five-six hours each game. Hard to see how it can be streamlined and retain all its 'mess.' I keep it around, but hard to see when the next game would be. I have used the plastic ships as ship-to-ship combat for Hyperspace Hack.
