Puster Sponsoring Member of TMP writes:

A3 and A4 are internationally normed sizes for paper.

The measurements used by most of the world for paper sizes. Using a ratio of 1:sqr(2), which means that the proportions remain when you half (or double) the papersize. A0 is sized so that it covers one m˛.

A4 is roughly comparable with US letter, though a bit longer and less wide. A3 is exactly double the size.
