The deaf man stories were always amongst the poorest of the series….why he felt the need to introduce a "supervillain" I can't fathom. As I recall the early books were much better than the later ones which relied more and more on violence and sexual sadism as well as more bizarre coincidences to resolve the plots.

I'll disagree, I enjoyed The Deaf Man's intricate plots (and humor therein), and I'm sorry the author never 'wrapped up' The Deaf Man before passing away.

He worked better in the novels than in this movie, though excellently cast as Yul Brynner.
