You know the Commanders Edition has the AS rules and the Companion book rules together with slight updates and corrections.

I've never played Alpha Strike, is it that much better for faster play, less book keeping and bigger games?

A lot has been abstracted, like heat isn't a concern except for some mechs that can do extra damage if they choose to overheat for a round. No torso twisting, no keeping track of hexes moved for a defensive bonus, etc.
