Class
Only ship of this class. (Although all subsequent ships of this general type were called monitors.)
Development
Designed by John Ericsson, an experienced engineer with a history of innovation.
Description
Often described as resembling "a cheese on a raft." A shallow-draft, low-in-the-water vessel with a prominent central turret.
Size
179' long, 41'6" wide, 10'6" height. 987 tons. 49 crew.
Propulsion
Ericsson vibrating trunk engine, 2 boilers, 1 screw, 9 knots.
Armor
8 inches on turret, 9 inches on pilothouse, 4.5 inches on sides, 2 inches on deck.
Armament
2 11" smooth-bore guns in turret.
