GINO

Acronym: "Guard In Name Only".

Term of reference for units whose name included the term 'Guard' or 'Guards', but whose quality was no better than regular units.

(Examples include Napoleonic Spanish Guard regiments, and many units of Napoleon's 'Young' Guard.)

'GINO' is a useful, if less-than-serious way of making clear whether you're referring to a unit which is 'Guard' by title or 'Guard' by quality.
