Interior Lines

Short for 'Interior (or Internal) Lines of Communication'.
Tactical concept based on the idea that a side which holds and defends an area of territory can move its forces freely around within that territory.
This allows them to reinforce defences, concentrate forces for attack, and to carry out resupply, casevac, and communication quickly and without fear of interdiction.
Conversely, the side attacking a held area have to move their forces around the outside of that area – the 'long way round'.
