Situation

What everyone knows:

March 12, 1896

On Earth: After their staggering defeat in the valley of Mariam Shavitu, the Italians have pulled out of Ethiopia completely, trading it to "the Bloody British" for a few crates of Martini-Henry rifles. The British were quick to accept the offer ("We can always make more martinis," one member of the House of Lords was heard to say).

On Mars, Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders are on a promotional tour as part of an exchange program between the American and British Armies. They are demonstrating the prowess of their cavalry force to Major General Rederring, the consulate general of Sirtis Major, when the wireless officer reports a distress call from the air liner Copernicus...

She went down in the Hunger Mountains and reports a horde of natives on the way. . .and Major-General, your god-daughter was on-board!
Celine, the Major-General's god-daughter

A collective gasp goes up from the assembled British troops, broken only by Teddy's triumphant shout:

Bully, boys! Now we'll really show 'em how it's done!

What the Martian player knows that the British/American player doesn't know:

The Copernicus was brought down by her Martian crew in an attempt to kidnap the Major-General's daughter. The mutiny attempt was only partly successful - the ship crashed rather than landing at the kraal of the local Martian warlord. Worse yet, the wireless operator managed to get off a distress signal and some of the passengers and British crew (including Celine) managed to get off the ship in the confusion after the crash. Reinforcements are on the way, but the local commander is determined to find Celine before they reach his position. Otherwise he is sure he will be fed to the baralanth!

Victory Conditions

British Major Victory if all civilians are evacuated and Teddy survives

British Minor Victory if all civilians are evacuated and Teddy dies

British Minor Defeat if any of the 3 civilians are taken to the Martian starting point

British Major Defeat if Celine is taken to the Martian starting point

Set-Up
Scenario map

  • The Copernicus has crashed in the lower left.
  • The Martians enter from the upper left.
  • The Earthers enter from the lower right. They are separated from the Copernicus by an impassable mountain region.
  • There are crystal flowers in the approximate center of the board (green area on map), surrounded by hills
  • Some of the civilians are hiding (see Special Rules)

Special Rules

What Neither player knows

  1. The crystal flowers are infested with brain worms.
  2. There are several positions around the ship where the civilians could be hiding. Place 6 markers around the ship in a generally circular perimeter. Place lichen around these points to represent scrub brush where the figures are hiding. Each marker is activated whenever a model reaches 6" away from the marker. When the marker is activated, the opposing player places the models within 6" of the marker.
    • Marker 1: Celine and three civilian passengers
    • Marker 2: Three sailors with rifles
    • Marker 3: Two sailors with pistols
    • Marker 4: Dread Baralanth!
    • Marker 5: Carcass of a brain worm (the Baralanth killed it) (or nothing)
    • Marker 6: Giant Dragonfly (or nothing)

(Note that all of my Martian scenarios tend to have Brain Worms and Giant Dragonflies!)

Brain Worms

Brain Worms are a native Martian critter. They attack by hypnotizing their prey and then telepathically devouring their brain. They won't leave the crystal flowers, as the flowers are actual brain wave matrices where the Worms store food for the Martian winter. Roll an opposed Smarts contest to avoid having your brain eaten. Once one figure has had its brain drained, the Worms will retreat back until another figure blunders into their crystal flower patch. Any Worm attacking Teddy has its brain exploded!

Move: 4"
Smarts: d4
Attack: 2" range

Baralanth

Will chase the closest armed figure. If it makes a successful attack it will withdraw with its kill (Remove it from the board).

Agility, Smarts, Spirit, Strength d8 (animal)
Vigor d8
Pace 10
Parry 6, Toughness 6

Giant Dragonflies

No stats - if someone shoots at them they fly off. Otherwise, move of 15 and if they are within 2" of a figure that figure suffers a -2 in shooting because of the distraction.

Recommended Figures

Martians:

Parroom Station - Martian Musketeers (I also use GW Kroot as a "veteran" Martian - just up the stats by one die type.)

Teddy and the Rough Riders:

Honorable Lead Boiler Suit - 1898 Spanish-American War SAW1 - SAW 3 for unmounted, 6 and 7 for mounted.

Sailors:

Parroom Station - Aero-Naval Brigade

The Copernicus:

My ship is scratch-built, but again Parroom Station comes to the rescue! - Ships of the Air

Brain Worms:

Fortress Figures. These are missing from their webiste, sadly, but email Fortress to check on availability. Alternately, replace the critters with any other horde-like figure (giant Martian rats, for instance).

Giant Dragonflies

From Michael's craft store. Stick 'em on a wire, glue wire to washer, paint washer. Done.

British Tank:

I used an Armorcast steam tank, but checking their page it appears these are no longer available!? Alternatives: Honorable Lead Boiler Suit - British Armored Car BR3 - BR 5 or London War Room - Landcruiser Marks 1 and 2
