Simian Legion Design Contest Entries

A chinese influence suggests itself from the decoration, from the highly organised nature of the Simian army, and some of the details of armour and shield on the example model.

• A uniform bright silk colour (eg. green, orange and yellow for preference) for the tunics of each regiment.
• Dark laquered armour (brown, blue, grey) with bright contrasting detail.
• Shields in bronze with part of the pattern picked out in the uniform colour as enamelling.
• The fur should be blue/black with different amounts of grey or white on the face (or pink around the muzzle) to differentiate individuals.

• Basic Red over black scheme.
• Red plume on a shiny black helmet with red trim.
• Black shiny armor with red trim and facings.
• Black shield with red accents
• Tunic of red and black.
• Leather red trimed in black (reverse from armor) (see picture)

Being in line with my painting ability, I used the "spray can" from Paint to do the sketch!

I believe a simple color scheme should used with a few primary colors: Royal Blue, Bronze/gold, and silver. The metallics should compliment the dark flesh and fur of the simians and the royal blue will work nicely with both the gold and silver.

I suggest using a simple paint scheme (not too many details, except for character and shields). Actually my shield design is a base of gold, highlighting the trim with silver, and doing the dots (gems?) in blue. The clothing will be royal blue. The scale armor will be silver.

As for the Simians themselves, I have chosen a darkish brown fur and a lighter redish-brown for the flesh (hands, feet, and face). That should do it!

Okay, I like the more Roman look for the troops. And these gorillas are not the elite troops. Maybe veteran, but not Centurion level. As such, they won't be the silverbacks. More likely they would be males, just out of youth having seen some action. Their fur would still be mainly black. Their faces a lighter shade, going to gray.

I chose white for their tunics with red trim because it stands out nicely with their dark skin and fur color. And it carries over the Roman theme of red in the uniform.

Their armor would be bronze with the skull cap, breast plate, and sword handle done bronze and the blade of the weapon done in steel. The shield would be trimmed with red on the outer edge and black seperating the two white areas. The pattern on the inside would be done in yellow with the studs done in gold. This creates a sort of concentric circle look drawing archer fire into the shield as opposed to the Simian body.

The scheme uses a great deal of bronze on the weapons and armor, although a steel color could be used for the blades. The armor is a dark bronze, with a lighter bronze used to highlight the raised sections. The clothing under the armor is a deep, kinda dark red, with the sleeves done in an off-white. The belt and straps are done with a brown leather color, decorations on the belt done with bronze or gold. The skin is black. The fur is also black with a white or grey highlight. More grey or white could be used to show seniority, as well as using more gold for shield and armor inlays.

This is basicaly the color scheme that I am curently using to paint my Simian army. I have some pictures of it on the 100 Kingdoms website. Posted under (oddly enough) "jugglingfool."

Intro: There are two ways one can go. Give all units of Legionnaires the same color uniform. Or give each unit its own unit color. Either way, the Legionnaires within a unit should be consistant.

Background: Color should be given some consideration and should be viewed in the context of the army as a whole. I'd take some inspiration from ancient Rome but wouldn't let that dictate my choice of colors. I'd also not paint the same color on the Legionnaires, Javalin Corp, or Praetorians. I would reserve purple for the Praetorians, earth tones or off-white for Javalin Corp and paint the Legionnaires bright, dirt-resistant colors (I believe the Simians have their own version of Scotchguard.)

Medium to dark brown with white streaks on some faces for character. For instance, around the temples.

If you go with a different uniform color for every unit other colors of note would be Green, Red, Black, Orange, Yellow - basically, primary and secondary colors. Apes like colors, you know. I would stay consistant with armor and weapons but the shield center sould match the uniform.

Hmmm, as the description states that "[t]here are no shouts of glee, no battle cries," thus, it must be that the colours of the Legionnaires contrast this. Each phalanx/tribe has its own history, and to further indicate this distinction as well as encourage "friendly" competition, each phalanx/tribe has its own corresponding colours. For example, a legion drawn from a coastal area may have bright blue livery, while another area of the Empire's subjects may be awash in bright greens. Of course, the most covetted colour is yellow, as these legionnaires are considered the most disciplined, ruthless bunch (they dare anyone to even mention "banana" around them).

To sum up, the underlying cloth is brightly coloured as mentioned above, while the overlaying armour is either lamenated (Similar to T'ang Chinese) or simple leather. Bronze bucklers, helms and swords, although steel could easily be used in a pinch if more colour balance is required. Although based on the shield design, I'd probably do a bronze or copper shield.
