Amazon Army Design

The Ancient ruleset I prefer is Warrior, a lineal descendant of the WRG Nth Edition ruleset. The challenge is to match an army in the Warrior "Biblical Warrior" list book with the Eureka Amazon catalog.

Since an Amazon contingent show up in the Troy cycle after the death of Hector, I decided to try to make up an Amazon army based on army lists contemporary with Troy.

Interestingly, some of the Eureka Guardswomen with axes - (assume a 100AM prefix) 209 and 210 - look vaguely Sea Peoples-ish, that was my first choice. Alas, no cavalry or close order infantry. So, I scanned a few other lists. Phrygians and Dark Ages Greeks came closest, not surprisingly. Other close matches were Philistine, a descendant of Sea Peoples, and Skythian with Bosporan Greek allies in another list book.

So, I decided to make up an army assuming that each Eureka troop type was a "required" type. I also decided to have two different allied contingents, "City Amazons" and "Country Amazons".

Here is my list, based on Warrior troop types and point costs. It's not a bad army...

CinC, Irregular B armed with Javelin Light Spear in 2-horse Light chariot with unarmed driver. 100 points.

Bodyguard for CinC, 2 Irr B Lch, warrior with JLS @ 16 pts = 32 points.

(From set 215, plus some heavy warriors for variety.)

Unit of 3 Lch, armed as above, @ 16 pts, + 25 command points. 73 points.

Another Lch unit,ditto @ 73 points.

4 elements of Light Cavalry horse archers (211), 2 on a base. Armed with bow, no shield. 4 X 2 X 4pts + 25 command = 57 points.

Ditto @ 57 points.

Warband. This gets a little complicated.

Front rank of 5 elements of 3 Light Heavy Infantry (Armored loose order), armed with Javelins, Irregular B. 5 X 3 X 6pts = 90 pts

Two rear ranks of 5 elements of 3 figures, IrrC LMI, JLS, Sh 2 X 5 X 3 X 3pts = 90 pts.

Add 25 command points. Total = 205 points.

This unit will use the experimental "Barbarian Infantry" rules. Figures from sets 205, 206, 209, 210.

Another unit, ditto. 205 points.

Ally general for "City Amazons", Regular B HC, JLS, with 2 Reg B HC, JLS.

75 pts + (2 x 9) = 93 points.

Sets 211 and 212, assuming that there is armor under their tunics.

Or, make them MC by deducting -2 points per figure.

List rule: Going by the Skythian analog, Amazon LC and HC can fight in 1 1/2 ranks.

Unit of HC, 2 elements of 3 figures, figures as Ally General, 2 x 3 x 9 + 10 points command. Total of 64 points.

Ditto. 64 points.

Unit of hoplites. Sets 201, 202, 207.

Front rank of 3 elements of 4 Heavy Infantry, Regular C with Long Thrusting Spear, shield.

3 x 4 x 6 pts = 72 points

Rear rank of 3 elements of 4 figures Medium Infantry, LTS, Sh.

3 x 4 s 4pts = 48 points.

Plus 10 command = 130 points.

Ditto, 130 points.

Peltasts. (204, 205) 6 elements of 4 figures, Reg C, Light Medium Infantry, JLS, Sh.

6 x 4 x 4pts + 10pts = 106 pts.

The following types can be in either the CinC's or Ally General's contingent.

6 elements of 2 Light Infantry Archers (206, 207). LI, B, no shield, Irr C.

6 x 2 x 2 + 25pts = 49 points

Ditto with slingers. (208) 49 pts.

6 elements of 2 LI, JLS, Sh

6 x 2 x 3 + 25 pts = 61 points.

This comes to roughly 1,530 points. Competition armies are usually 1,600. Add more Li, or LC.

Or, add another crew-person to the LCh at 6 points, armed with either a bow or javelin, making it a Heavy chariot which by the Sea Peoples analogy can skirmish. The Eureka chariot is nice and roomy, and can easily hold 3 people.

This makes a nice balanced army with 9 chariots, 25 cavalry, and 196 infantry, give or take a few.

It should hold its own versus other Biblical armies, except the Assyrians, which the Four Horsemen want to make into Supermen with unpaid-for List Rules.

The Warbands pack a wicked punch, especially with the "Everyone is Special" Barbarian Infantry experimental rules. The chariots cause Unease, and can skirmish. Decent missile troops. Solid core of hoplites to maneuver around. Hard hitting HC.
